What is Balayage?
Balayage actually dates back to the 1970s. The first known usage of the technique was at the Carita Salon in Paris, a salon and city that our founder is all too familiar with. It stayed relatively unknown until the 1990s when some trendsetters tried to bring the style back into fashion. Today, this unique way to color hair is popular with people all over the world. Its freehand technique allows color to be applied by hand rather than using a traditional foiling or cap highlighting technique.
As one of the leading salons delivering Balayage across Miami, it’s here that you can be confident of achieving the most beautiful result. Balayage, is one of the most-requested color services at Hairbox 5 and a specialty of Julie Fiore and Dan A, executed with modern results. Our advanced Balayage, hand painting, Ombré and highlighting services deliver a luxurious and personalized service for each of our clients. As one of the leading salons delivering Balayage across Miami, it’s here that you can be confident of achieving the most beautiful result.
What is the Difference Between Balayage and Ombre?
Balayage aims for a more lived-in natural feeling which gives an authentic look as it allows your hair to meld darker and lighter tones together. The major difference between Balayage vs Ombré is that Balayage is a technique, and Ombré is a gradient of color. Ombré is when a stylist uses the Balayage technique to create a color contrast that begins darkest at the roots, blends into a rich medium shade towards the middle, and finishes with the lightest parts at the ends of the hair. Balayage is required to achieve Ombré hair, though Balayage on its own can give many contrasting effects by using differing shades strategically throughout the hair for a multi-dimensional finish.
In essence the word ‘Ombré’ means to have tones of color that meld into each other, graduating from dark to light. This shadowing hair coloring technique requires the top of your head to be of a darker color and then gradually fades down to the length of your hair. Ombré is bolder, with the lightened hair concentrated at the end, eliminating the dimension while Balayage has a more natural hair growth period, with lighter pieces adding dimension throughout the hair, with a very subtle line of regrowth.
With the Ombré technique there is still a noticeable division of color – from dark to light or light to dark (tips have 100% coverage too).
All top 10 Balayage salons in Miami and across the world have their interpretation of what Balayage and Ombré looks like but Balayage doesn’t have to be Ombré, but Ombré has to be Balayage. So Balayage is the technique, and Ombré is the style. You can learn more about the difference between Ombré and Balayage by visiting our salon on Miami Beach for a free consultation.
Is Balayage better than Highlights?
The difference between hair highlights and Balayage is that highlights almost always use foils and are often placed much closer to the scalp and applied in specific sections whereas Balayage is more of a graduated visual hand-painted technique brushed in to the hair in non prearranged sections to add shifting and varying flows in a sweep of color. Balayage is a better coloring option for hair below the shoulders however we have had much success coloring short style pixie hair for example.
One technique involves Balayage and highlights, its modern take – chic hair with depth and dimension that leaves your hair with a sun kissed beach hair finish. At Hair Box 5 Salon on Miami Beach we are experts in the French hair coloring technique known as Balayage, and it is one of our most requested services.
What types of Balayage are there?
At Hair Box 5 we achieve so many different effects from soft, natural highlights to something strong and or beachy waves Balayage for Miami Beach goers or a Blended Bronde Balayage. The fact it’s so low maintenance it’s a bonus for most women. We love the aesthetic of Balayage finished with loose curls or a beachy, tousled look where you can see the color variations ribbon through the hair. A Caramel balayage is a gorgeous hair coloring technique that delicately sweeps in light and natural brunette colors. For the brunettes a deep Balayage on brown hair color features dimensional highlights hand-painted for a healthy and voluminous brunette mane with a low-maintenance look. For ash blonde Balayage or a Balayage in chocolate, a partial balayage or the latest trend of fall colors, a copper Balayage or even a Balayage in red – with red hues to create highlights or Ombré’s. Is Balayage for me? How Do You Know Balayage is Right For You?
Balayage is best done on natural hair and it’s also a very economical way to color your hair as you never have a solid differentiation line or regrowth, so if you can’t afford to get it done for another month it won’t look unsightly. Our colorists at Hair Box 5 Hair Salon can create a Balayage look that can be initially done with foils until the hair is ready to have only Balayage.
If you’re contemplating on having natural and elegant highlights for your hair then the Balayage coloring is the perfect option for you.
Balayage complements every hair color or hair type. It doesn’t matter if your hair color is brunette, brown, or blonde because Balayage suits every hair color and differs from regular highlights and is a ‘less is more approach’ to your hair color. Balayage is also a low-maintenance solution that eventually grows out with your hair meaning you don’t have to rush to our salon on Miami Beach for a touch-up.
When you seek a colorist around Miami Beach always consider if the color specialists consistently proposes and renders a coloring technique to achieve the look you desire that best suits your hair type and color history.
There are many differing techniques to Balayage however it is beneficial to always always to get a cut for any coloring. A cut removes split ends and breakage after the coloring process and enhances the finish of the color by allowing the hair to look a lot more healthier and silky soft to look and touch. Whether it’s just a trim or a full re-style, this will work wonders to enhance the finish of the color. If having Balayage color treatment, highlights and/or lowlights or babylights adding some layers is a great way to show these off and create more movement in the hair.
Depending on your hair length, be it a sharp, strong cut like the bob will require a robust color or a block color to show off the cut. Though traditionally Balayage is best left to more flowing hairstyles.
Balayage Maintenance Tips
Balayage will dry your hair out no more than classic foiling as long as you have a trained professional applying your color. As with foils you should always use salon professional shampoos and conditioners as well as have regular treatments. No matter what the technique, your color will always look its best if your hair is in good condition. Because of the lighten – ing and its focus on the ends of your regular at home treatments are essential to maintain integrity of the hair.

How is Balayage Done?
Balayage is an easy method that does not require any foil or caps in the application process. The color is applied by hand to the hair. The technique gets its name by its method, which is, applying the color, then sweeping it down to the length of the hair with a brush or hands.
Celebrity Balayage favorites
Celebrities gravitate toward Balayage because it provides a more natural-looking, more subtle alternative to the Ombré effect that’s been popular in recent years. With that said we love Amber Heard’s dramatic punch of golden blonde highlights over one-shoulder style or Olivia Palermo’s enviable Balayage combo with beach waves. And we adore the mix up layered lengths and highlights that are all her best hair angles on Jennifer Lawrence and the natural ones and not too heavy all-over copper balayage on Rihanna, from root to tip . Not to mention Lauren Conrad, Julia Roberts, Sarah Jessica Parker. Or check out more Balayage specialties from our salon near Miami and located on Miami Beach.
Balayage Trends
Balayage has been around for so long and will remain an integral part of the way we color in the salon at our Miami Beach location. However, the trend at the moment with the heavy graduation from dark to light is constantly changing. It started out about five years ago being very subtle with people like Gisele Bundchen who now calls Miami Beach her home.
A more natural, sun-kissed effect was desired then. In the last few years we have seen much stronger effects being worn, for example our owner Dan A, who has really taken it to the next level. This past winter we have seen the same techniques used but with a warmer, deeper feel. Lots of celebrities have their Balayage finished with pastel glosses as well as introducing more foiling through the top to create a softer Ombré.
